Trucking route software is route planning and route optimization software built around a commercial vehicle profile rather than a car. The difference sounds small and is the whole point.
Routing built around the vehicle, not the car
Every truck route starts with a vehicle profile: height, gross weight, axle weights, length, width, trailer type and whether the load is hazardous. The routing engine then excludes every road segment where that profile is illegal or physically impossible, so the driver never sees a low bridge, a posted weight limit or a no-truck parkway as an option.
Consumer maps have no profile. Google Maps will send a 13 ft 6 in trailer under a 12 ft railroad bridge because the road exists and cars use it. That single gap is why the category exists.
Route planning versus route optimization
Route planning is A to B navigation for one truck: turn-by-turn directions, truck stops, tolls and state mileage. TruckRouter, Trimble CoPilot and driver apps like Trucker Path sit here. The output is one legal, drivable route with an accurate ETA.
Route optimization is the multi-stop problem: sequencing dozens or hundreds of deliveries across a fleet so that time windows, vehicle capacity, driver shifts and truck restrictions are all respected while total miles fall. Where compliance data comes in
Since the FMCSA electronic logging device mandate reached full enforcement in December 2019, nearly every interstate truck carries an ELD. Trucking route software increasingly reads that hours-of-service data live, so a dispatcher can see that a driver has three hours of drive time left before planning a five-hour leg.
The same platforms often calculate state-by-state mileage for IFTA fuel tax returns and flag hazmat routes against the National Hazardous Materials Route Registry that the FMCSA maintains as the official list of designated and restricted hazmat roads.
Who the category serves
Owner-operators and small fleets mostly need truck-legal navigation and mileage. Regional carriers, LTL operations and last mile delivery fleets need multi-stop optimization, live tracking and customer notifications. Enterprise transportation teams layer all of it onto a transportation management system.
Most optimization tools tap out at a few thousand stops per plan, so a business asking for 20,000 deliveries a day is shopping in a much smaller market. Know your daily stop count before shortlisting.
